In Search Of…A Decent Airline Meal

Filed under: Dining — mike @ 2:07 pm

The search for a decent airline meal in the US is, at this point, one akin to the search for Big Foot. Sure, there are rumors out there that it exists and people claim they have seen it, but it all seems like Legend at this point.

As airlines continue to charge for snack boxes (US Airways charges for soda at this point), the idea of a great meal on a plane seems like a joke at this point. However, for those who get the opportunity to fly in Europe and Asia, a delicious gourmet meal isn’t a thing of the past.

MSNBC broke down some of the finest meals you can find while high above the ground, proving that if you’re on the right flight, even the foodies among us can find a dish that satisfies.

Keep reading for a glimpse of some of the culinary delights awaiting you in foreign airspace…

From MSNBC:

Japan Airlines

  • Japan Airlines perfected the soba noodle at 35,000 feet: not too soft, not too firm. The airline spent two years getting its onboard preparation just right. Zara soba, which are Japanese buckwheat noodles, served cold with a dipping sauce, are just one option from the airline’s traditional Japanese menu. It also offers a Western menu with low-cal options for those watching their figures.

Singapore Airlines

  • If you’re flying first or business class on Singapore Airlines, you can order a meal in advance with the ‘Book a Cook’ option. Main courses include lobster thermidor, roast rack of lamb and Thai red curry chicken. The airline also has a panel of nine chefs from eight countries and three wine consultants to ensure that meals are both tasty and unique, such as SIA’s sea scallops and mixed vegetables over noodles.

Check out MSNBC’s “There is such thing as a good airline meal” for more of the best food airlines have to offer.

  1. My girlfriend and I just flew from Sydney to Viet Nam, via Singapore. We flew in to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and out from Hanoi. A 10-day vacation. It was a great experience. The food on Singapore Airlines was truly excellent. Both my lady and I are foodies, too. We like our food and we know what we like. Even in Economy, we felt pampered.
